Red Hot Chili Peppers is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983. For most of their career, the group's lineup has consisted of vocalist Anthony Kiedis, guitarist John Frusciante, bassist Michael "Flea" Balzary, and drummer Chad Smith. The band's varied musical style has fused traditional rock with various elements of funk, punk rock, alternative rock, heavy metal, and psychedelic rock.

In addition to Kiedis and Flea, the group originally featured guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons. After Slovak died of a heroin overdose in 1988, Irons resigned, and was briefly replaced with D. H. Peligro. He soon introduced Flea to Frusciante, who was an aspiring guitarist at the time. Drummer Chad Smith was recruited few weeks before the recording of Mother's Milk, the band's fourth album, began.

The band's fifth album, 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, was a critical success and sold over twelve million copies. Frusciante grew increasingly uncomfortable with the band's success and left the group in 1992. The band employed Dave Navarro (of Jane's Addiction) for their subsequent album, 1995's One Hot Minute. It failed, however, to match the critical acclaim of Blood Sugar Sex Magik and was a commercial disappointment, selling less than half of its predecessor. Creative differences between Navarro and the rest of the band caused him to be fired from the band not long after.

Meanwhile Frusciante, in his absence, developed a severe drug addiction and almost lost his life. Nevertheless, in 1998 he completed rehabilitation and rejoined the band at Flea's request. The reunited foursome returned to the studio to record 1999's Californication, which would go on to sell fifteen million units worldwide, becoming their most successful album to date. It was followed up three years later with By the Way, an album showing a more subdued and melodic side to the band. In 2006, the group released the double album Stadium Arcadium. Stadium Arcadium was voted the second best album of 2006 by Rolling Stone magazine and nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy in 2007.

Red Hot Chili Peppers (originally Tony Flow and the Miraculous Masters of Mayhem)[2] were formed by Fairfax High School alumni Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons, and Michael "Flea" Balzary following what was supposed to be a one time performance in 1983.[3]

It was never the intent of the foursome to become part of the ubiquitous Los Angeles punk scene, as Slovak was already committed to another group, What Is This?. Their first performance was at the Rhythm Lounge, to a crowd of roughly 30 people.[4] One song had been created for the occasion, which involved the band improvising music while Kiedis rapped a poem he had written called "Out in L.A.."[5] The performance was so lively, that those in charge of promoting the show asked the band to return once again the week following.[4] As a result, the members changed their band's name to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. There followed several shows at various LA clubs and musical venues. Six songs were derived from these initial shows, which were taped and recorded onto a demo tape, for reference and demonstration to, a record company.

No Doubt

No Doubt is a third wave ska band from Anaheim, California, United States. The group was founded in 1986, and the ska-pop sound of its 1992 debut album failed to make waves due to the popularity of the grunge movement at the time. The band's diamond-certified album Tragic Kingdom helped to launch the ska revival of the 1990s, and "Don't Speak", the third single from the album, set a record when it spent sixteen weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart, later broken by the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris".

The group released its next album, Return of Saturn, four years later with a dominant New Wave sound, but despite positive reviews, the album was considered a commercial failure. Fifteen months later, the band reappeared with Rock Steady, which incorporated reggae and dancehall music into their work. The album was primarily recorded in Jamaica and featured collaborations with Jamaican artists Bounty Killer, Sly and Robbie, and Lady Saw. The album produced two Grammy-winning singles, "Hey Baby" and "Underneath It All".

No Doubt released the compilation The Singles: 1992-2003 and box set Boom Box in 2003, both of which contained a cover version of the Talk Talk synthpop song "It's My Life". Frontwoman Gwen Stefani launched her solo career the next year with several collaborations, including bandmate Tony Kanal and Neptune Pharrell Williams, while guitarist Tom Dumont began his side project, Invincible Overlord. During its career, the band has won two Grammy Awards and sold 27 million records worldwide to date.

Actualmente La banda sigue considerandose bastante influencial. Mundialmente, Sublime ha vendido 17 millones de álbums.

Sublime began in 1988 in Long Beach, California as a Reggae/Rock/Punk band and grew to fame in the mid-'90s. They combined such genres as reggae, punk, and rap. The band released just two albums during the first seven years. Lead singer Brad Nowell died of heroin overdose on May 25, 1996 in a hotel room, just two months before the release of their self-titled third record, which became a hugely successful release based on the single 'What I Got'. This came seven days after his wedding to Troy, who'd given birth to their son, Jakob. The band collapsed, but the album was still slated for a July release, so the obviously inappropriate "Killin' It" title was dropped and it was released as a self-titled album. A number of posthumous releases followed, among them 1997's Second-Hand Smoke, 1998's Stand by Your Van, and Sublime Acoustic: Bradley Nowell & Friends. A 3-CD/1-DVD box set of demos, rarities, and live recording, called Everything Under the Sun, was released on November 14, 2006. The music of Sublime is still being carried on by tribute bands such as "Wrong Way","Seasonal Brew" "Sublemon" and "Badfish".
Following Sublime's demise, its surviving members, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, began a new band under the name "Long Beach Dub Allstars" (Disbanded in 2002). Long Beach Dub Allstars also included many frequent contributors to Sublime, including Michael "Miguel" Happoldt, Todd Foreman, and "Field" Marshall Goodman. Brad Nowell's beloved dalmation "Lou Dogg" can still be visited in a museum in Long Beach CA.

Wall St enjoys best week in six months

Wall Street stocks had their best week for six months after the Federal Reserve surprised markets by slashing interest rates by half a percentage point.

The S&P500 on Tuesday enjoyed its biggest one-day gain since March 2003 as investors bet that low interest rates would lend support to the US economy.

The decision to cut both the Fed Funds rate and the discount rate – the rate at which banks can borrow directly from the Fed – appeared to calm equity markets as share volatility eased.

The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility index, a measure of future market volatility, fell 24 per cent to lows last reached at the end of July before the credit squeeze.

Trading volumes were high on the week and on Friday the New York Stock Exchange set a new volume record for the first hour of trading.

Equity markets surged even as the dollar fell to a new record low against the euro.

The CurrencyShares Euro Trust exchange traded fund, which tracks the price of the euro, closed the week at an all-time high.

The S&P 500 was 2.8 per cent higher on the week at 1,525.72, within 1.8 per cent of its all-time high, set in July. The Dow Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 2.8 per cent at 13,820.19 while the Nasdaq Composite was up 2.7 per cent at 2,671.22.

Large-cap companies saw particularly strong gains. The Russell Top 50 index of the largest US companies by market capitalisation hit its highest level since 2001.

“I’m surprised at the strong snap back – it’s almost like we discounted everything that happened over the last three months,” Joe Ranieri, managing director of trading of Canaccord Adams, said. “The weaker dollar is going to be good for earnings at the larger cap companies, particularly in the tech sector.”

The Nasdaq was lifted on Friday by some positive earnings news from Oracle and details of a share buyback by Texas Instruments.

Google set a new all-time high, up 5.9 per cent for the week at $560.10.

However, it was a disappointing week for Microsoft, down 1.3 per cent to $28.65, after a European court upheld a European Commission ruling that the software group had abused its near-monopoly position.

Oracle reported a 25 per cent rise in quarterly profit. The stock was up 9.5 per cent on the week at $21.98.

Texas Instruments was 5.6 per cent higher at $36.62 after its board approved a $5bn share buyback programme and announced plans to raise its cash dividend by 25 per cent.

In other earnings news, Nike said quarterly profit rose 51 per cent. Shares in the athletic shoe and clothing company were flat for the week at $57.26.

The week’s earnings news was dominated by the brokerage sector as Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Bear Stearns turned in their third-quarter report cards.

Goldman and Lehman surprised the market with better-than-expected earnings, up 10.2 per cent to $209.98 and 5.4 per cent to $62.70 on the week, respectively.

But Bear Stearns and Morgan Stanley disappointed.

Shares in Morgan, which reported a 17 per cent third-quarter profit decline, were down 2.5 per cent on the week at $64.44. Bear’s earnings fell 61 per cent after fixed-income revenues plummeted but its shares ended the week flat at $117.32.

Transport stocks lagged the market as crude oil set a series of record highs.

FedEx, down 4.7 per cent at $104.10, cut its earnings forecast for the year due to higher energy costs and uncertainty about the near-term economic outlook.

Shares in Harman International Industries plunged 21.3 per cent to $85.

The company confirmed rumours that Goldman Sachs and KKR would not complete their planned $8bn purchase of the audio equipment maker.

Mattel, up 6.6 per cent at $23.94, finished the week with an apology to the Chinese people for damaging the reputation of their manufacturers after the recall of around 21m toys. On a visit to Beijing, Thomas Debrowski, executive vice-president of worldwide operations, said the majority of toys were recalled because of design flaws, not poor Chinese manufacturing.

It was another volatile week for homebuilder stocks as positive news about the relaxation of regulation of mortgage lenders was overshadowed by more downbeat data on housing starts, which declined 2.6 per cent inAugust. ButtheS&Pmaterials index recorded strong gains as investors bet on the continuing strength of the global construction boom.

Dollar hits record low against euro

The dollar plunged to a record low against the euro this week after the Federal Reserve surprised investors with an aggressive interest rate cut.
The Fed cut its main interest rate by 50 basis points to 4.75 per cent on Tuesday and also cut the discount rate – at which it lends directly to banks – by 50bp to 5.25 per cent.
The Fed had been expected to deliver a 25bp cut. Analysts said the size of the move intensified fears over the state of the US economy, heightening expectations that the Fed would deliver a series of cuts in the months ahead.

Moreover, analysts said the subsequent rally in equity markets and risk appetite resulted in less safe haven demand for the dollar from US investors repatriating funds from overseas.

Meanwhile, there were signs that foreign investors were beginning to shun US securities as the Treasury TICS data revealed a collapse in portfolio capital inflows to the US in July as well as a growing reliance on short-term inflows.

The dollar fell through the $1.40 level against the euro for the first time, hitting a record low of $1.4120 on Friday. Over the week, the dollar lost 1.5 per cent against the single currency.

The euro’s move through the psychologically important $1.40 level – seen as a pain barrier for eurozone exporters – sparked a chorus of calls from European politicians urging the European Central Bank to abandon its monetary tightening bias.

Analysts said that while Jean-Claude Trichet, ECB president, might not share the view that eurozone interest rates should be cut, he was not unconcerned about the euro’s rise.

Last weekend, Mr Trichet noted the US had said a strong dollar was in its interests, while Japanese officials have said the yen should reflect improving economic fundamentals.

“The repetition of these pointed comments continues to make us wonder whether Mr Trichet may want to spearhead a fresh European effort to tackle currency misalignment at the next meeting of G7 finance ministers and central bankers in October,” said Simon Derrick at Bank of New York Mellon.

The dollar also lost ground elsewhere, falling 1.3 per cent to SFr1.1730 against the Swiss franc over the week, dropping 0.6 per cent to $2.0185 against the pound and tumbling 3.5 per cent to a low of C$0.9939 against the Canadian dollar, the first time the loonie has achieved parity with the dollar since 1976.

The dollar did rise against the yen, however, edging 0.1 per cent higher to Y115.40 as rallying equity markets boosted risk appetite and demand for carry trades.
Over the week, the yen fell 1.5 per cent to Y162.60 against the euro, dropped 3 per cent to Y99.90 against the Australian dollar and tumbled 4.6 per cent to Y85.87 against the New Zealand dollar.

The yen also fell 0.7 per cent to Y233.15 against sterling.

However, the pound came under pressure against the euro as the Bank of England was forced into a U-turn in the face of the problems surrounding Northern Rock, the beleaguered UK mortgage lender. The Bank, which had previously shown reluctance to ease tight liquidity money market conditions, made £10bn of three-month money available to participants.

Analysts said the move heightened speculation that the next move in UK interest rates would be lower.

The pound fell to £0.7020 against the euro on Friday, its lowest level in more than two and a half years, before pulling back to stand at £0.6975, 0.8 per cent down on the week.
